It is a good idea to prepare for the worst case scenarios. Forgetting the password for your Windows user account is one of them and it is very difficult to solve this issue. There are a few solutions available, but it would be easier just to reinstall the operating system. If you find yourself in such a predicament, Active Password Changer will help you reset the password, so you will not have to reinstall Windows and lose important data.

Active Password Changer comes in a 10 MB package and it can be installed like any other application. Just specify a destination path and choose what components to install and the program will be ready in a few moments. Alternatively, you can opt for a complete installation, if you want to install the software in a default folder, without making any other configurations.

Thanks to Active Password Changer's wizard-like design, you will be able to reset an account's password, without too much effort. To reset a password, the software needs to find the MS Security Accounts Manager Database (SAM). It can search for the SAM on all disk volumes or you can target a volume manually. The process will not take long, regardless of your choice.

After selecting a disk partition, you will find all user accounts, displayed in a list. You can select any account, including disabled ones or the account with the lost password and proceed to the next stage, to reset the password or perform other actions. Besides clearing a user's password, you can enable or disable his account, lock it, disable force smart card log in or force the user to change his password the next time he signs in. You can also allow or prevent a certain user to log in, at certain hours of certain days.

Before you ask how to reset a password if there is only one user account available, you should know that Active Password Changer comes with a MS DOS module as well. This makes it possible to reset a password, without launching MS Windows. You just need to use the MS DOS command prompt to open the software's folder and run a different executable. Other utilities will help you create bootable discs or USB flash drives, create ISO images and burn them to a CD or DVD. They are included in the same setup package and, like the MS DOS module, you can launch them with separate .exe files.

Pros

You can use the application to reset your account's password, in case you forget or lose it. The software provides support for MS DOS as well, so you can reset a password even if your operating system has only one account. The software comes with additional utilities, to help you create bootable discs, ISO images and more.

Cons

You may encounter a few difficulties when running Active Password Changer on 64-bit operating systems. Thanks to Active Password Changer, losing your account's password will not be a serious issue and you will not have to reinstall Windows to solve it.
